Giurdignano

The Authentic Soul of Salento

Located just a few kilometers from the beaches of Otranto, Giurdignano is a serene, elegant village where time seems to flow at a gentler pace. Surrounded by a lush countryside of centuries-old olive groves, dry-stone walls, and ancient underground oil mills, this destination is ideal for those seeking to experience the most authentic heart of Salento. Walking through its streets, you can feel the deep history, vibrant traditions, and warm local hospitality. Giurdignano provides visitors with a peaceful haven far from the crowds—making it the perfect base to explore the surrounding wonders and return each evening to the tranquil retreat of Olimpo B&B.

The Megalithic Gardens

A Journey into Prehistory

Giurdignano is internationally renowned as “Italy’s Megalithic Garden” thanks to its extraordinary concentration of prehistoric monuments scattered across the village and nearby countryside. Strolling along its paths feels like stepping into an open-air museum filled with majestic menhirs and ancient dolmens (such as the famous Dolmen Stabile).

Erected millennia ago and tied to ancient sun and earth worship, these impressive stone structures create a deeply captivating and mystical atmosphere. It is a scenic trail to explore by foot or bicycle—perfect for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.

San Giuseppe & San Rocco

Tradition, Lights, and Faith

St. Joseph’s Tables: On March 19th, the village celebrates one of its oldest and most evocative traditions: the historic Tavole di San Giuseppe. As a sign of devotion and hospitality, local homes set up grand tables laden with traditional peasant dishes—such as the famous maccarruni with chickpeas—to nourish devotees and visitors alike. It is an ancient rite of sharing and fellowship that transforms the town into a journey of flavors, faith, and warm hospitality.

Feast of San Rocco: Every August, Giurdignano dresses up to celebrate its patron saint, San Rocco, in one of the community’s most cherished events. During the festivities, the village streets are illuminated by Salento’s famous and spectacular luminarie—grand sculptures of light that enchant visitors of all ages. Featuring solemn processions, folk music concerts, marching brass bands, local food stalls, and fireworks, the festival celebrates all the joy and devotion of the Salento summer.

Otranto

The Gateway to the East Between History and the Sea

Otranto is a coastal gem suspended between rich history and the crystal-clear blue of the Adriatic Sea. Known as the easternmost point in Italy, this fortified town charms visitors with its historic center—a labyrinth of stone alleys, scenic viewpoints, and artisan shops.

Exploring Otranto is like stepping back in time: from the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, home to the world-famous Tree of Life floor mosaic, to the formidable Aragonese Castle, a fortress overlooking the harbor. With its city beaches, rocky coastline, and celebrated bays along the Otranto coast, the town offers a perfect balance of culture, vibrant evenings, and pristine waters—just 8 km away from Olimpo B&B.

Baia dei Turchi

A Caribbean Oasis

Located just a few kilometers north of Otranto, Baia dei Turchi is one of the most iconic and breathtaking destinations along the Salento coastline. According to local tradition, it was on this stretch of powdery white sand that Turkish forces landed during the historic siege of 1480.
Today, the bay reveals itself as a natural paradise sheltered by a dense, fragrant Mediterranean pine forest, accessible via scenic walking trails through nature. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine sand, and low cliffs draped in coastal vegetation, Baia dei Turchi offers visitors an unspoiled landscape of exotic charm—the perfect spot for a day of pure relaxation in a majestic setting.

Cava di Bauxite

The Emerald Lake

Hidden just steps away from Baia delle Orte lies the famous Bauxite Quarry (Cava di Bauxite), an almost Martian-like landscape offering a unique interplay of colors. Disused since the late 1970s, this former mining site was slowly reclaimed by nature, giving rise to an extraordinary micro-ecosystem.

At the center of the crater, a striking emerald-green freshwater lake has formed over time, surrounded by steep rock walls of deep, vibrant red. The contrast between the warm earthy tones of the terrain and the intense green of the water creates a postcard-perfect view, making it one of the most photographed and beloved destinations for travelers and hikers from around the globe.

Lecce

Often called the “Florence of the South,” Lecce is a masterpiece of art and architecture. Here, the unique local limestone (pietra leccese)—soft and warm-gold in color—comes to life in dramatic facades, intricately carved balconies, and squares of rare elegance. Wandering through the historic center feels like stepping into an open-air museum, the beating heart of Salento’s rich culture.

Piazza del Duomo

A Courtyard of Golden Stone

Piazza del Duomo is one of Italy’s rare “enclosed” squares, accessed through a single entry point that offers visitors a breathtaking visual surprise. The square brings together some of the city’s most iconic landmarks:

  • The Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta: An imposing structure featuring a understated main facade alongside a lavishly decorated side entrance.
  • The Bell Tower: Standing nearly 70 meters high, it offers sweeping views over the city—stretching all the way to the sea on clear days.
  • The Bishop’s Palace & The Seminary: Magnificent examples of Baroque architecture that complete the square’s theatrical setting.

The Basilica of Santa Croce & Piazza Sant'Oronzo

The City's Soul

At the center of local life, the ultimate Baroque masterpiece meets Lecce’s ancient Roman origins:

  • The Basilica of Santa Croce: Famous for its spectacular, highly detailed facade featuring a central rose window and carved allegorical figures, cherubs, and mythical beasts.
  • The Roman Amphitheater: Set in the center of Piazza Sant’Oronzo, this partially excavated arena offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s ancient past.
  • The Column of Sant’Oronzo: Soaring above the square, it supports the bronze statue of the patron saint guarding the city.

Castle of Charles V & The Historic City Gates:

Preserving History

Beyond its sacred Baroque art, Lecce preserves a formidable monumental heritage that reflects its historical evolution:

  • The Castle of Charles V: A 16th-century fortress commissioned by the emperor to defend against invasions, now a vibrant hub for cultural exhibitions, events, and the Paper-Mâché Museum (Museo della Cartapesta).
  • Porta Napoli & The Ancient Gates: The grand triumphal arch serving as the main entrance to the old town, which—together with Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio—defines the boundaries of Lecce’s historic city walls.
